 Commonwealth Assisted Living, LLC is based in Charlottesville, Virginia and currently manages twelve assisted living facilities with a combined capacity of over 600 residents. Eight of our buildings currently offer specialized Alzheimer’s/Dementia units, and plans are in place to expand this service to two additional locations in the next 12 months. Our management team members complement each other, and together we offer a complete package of experience in all the aspects of operating an assisted living facility. Our philosophy of staying in the Commonwealth of Virginia and within a three-hour driving radius of our properties enables us to provide the personal involvement and frequent on-site presence that is crucial when operating this type of business.
Mission Statement Our goal is to provide quality care to our elderly population in a non-institutional, home-like atmosphere. We endeavor to provide these services at a price that remains affordable to our residents while allowing for an attractive return for our clients and investors. Management and Administration On behalf of our clients, we provide a team of professionals who work with each facility’s on-site management to assure quality housing, personal care, and comprehensive services that are responsive to the needs and preferences of residents and their families. We oversee the maintenance of regulatory compliance, personnel recruitment, training and retention, census maintenance and development, revenue enhancement, receivables management and cost controls. Our goal is to provide optimum resident care with the most efficient operation possible. We offer a number of successful tactics that have resulted in both enhanced resident care and consistent compliance.
We have developed and implemented training programs for both nursing staff and ancillary personnel, allowing them to be comfortable and knowledgeable when completing their duties. In addition, we strive to promote a workplace atmosphere that recognizes and awards personal accountability and promotes respect, understanding, teamwork, flexibility and good humor among caring employees. Our staff has had past involvement in the Assisted Living Federation of America (ALFA), Virginia Adult Home Association (VAHA) and Virginia Center for Assisted Living (an affiliate of Virginia Healthcare Association).Management Team Richard J. Brewer, President
richard@commonwealthal.com Mr. Brewer is the entrepreneurial leader of Commonwealth Assisted Living and has been intimately involved in its formation, as well as the acquisition all of its properties. He has been in the industry for the last thirteen years and managed seven facilities and eight personal care agencies for American Retirement Homes, Inc. before forming CAL. Richard has overseen all operational aspects of an assisted living facility, including licensing compliance, resident care, marketing, personnel management, medication administration and fiscal management. In addition to operations, he has been involved in numerous facility transactions, including new development, acquisitions, dispositions and refinances. He currently serves on the Board of the Virginia Assisted Living Association as its Legislative Chair, as well as the Board of the Jefferson Area Board on Aging, and the Board of Mountainside Senior Living, a non-profit assisted living facility in Crozet, VA.
Nancy Higgs, Vice President of Operations
nhiggs@commonwealthal.com Mrs. Higgs oversees the day-to-day operation of each of our facilities. She has been in the industry for 17 years, first as Administrator and then as Regional Vice President, overseeing the operation of 8 separate assisted living facilities. Nancy has experience with both new development and turn-around facilities, and has worked to standardize operations in each of our buildings. To ensure their success, she has developed a strong relationship with the Department of Social Services, and completes Quality Assurance reviews to ensure we exceed standards.
Charles Ix, Vice President of Sales & Marketing

Mr. Ix brings to Commonwealth Assisted Living a broad range of experience and commitment to seniors. He has been working with seniors for the past 10 years. As owner and administrator of Assured Home Health Care, Charles guided the company to triple digit growth and managed its subsequent sale to private investors. He then created a partnership with the Jefferson Area Board of Aging (JABA) and started My Home for Life, LLC. My Home for Life, LLC currently provides products and services to seniors wanting to stay safely in their homes. Charles is a founding board member and current treasurer of Mountainside Senior Living, a non-profit assisted living facility in Crozet, VA.
Victoria L. Morris, Director of Accounting
vmorris@commonwealthal.com Mrs. Morris is in charge of the bookkeeping operations for all of our facilities. She brings 18 years of experience in managing the financial operations of assisted living facilities. By centralizing bookkeeping operations in our home office, we are able to achieve savings for our clients’ facilities. In addition to handling AR, AP, Payroll and General Ledger, she handles budgeting and cost control for our facilities. Additionally, Vicky brings experience with the IRS, sales tax and state audits, HUD record-keeping, bookkeeping of over 25 different business entities, preparation of numerous loan packages, as well as due diligence preparation and scrutiny for both sale and acquisition..
Cheryl C. Brunk, Office Manager
cbrunk@commonwealthal.com Ms. Brunk brings 23 years of industry experience. She has been involved in the formation and organization of numerous assisted living facilities as well as other multi-family housing projects. Cheryl has an extensive knowledge of operational policies for assisted living facilities, as well as employment policies and procedures pertinent to our industry. She manages all of our insurance issues and exposures, including property, liability, and workers compensation insurance, as well as unemployment claims and licensing.
Donna S. Finch, LPN, Corporate Nurse
dfinch@commonwealthal.com Ms. Finch has been a Licensed Practical Nurse for 38 years and has spent the last 21 years in assisted living. Having worked in positions as diverse as Activity Director, Director of Nursing, and Administrator in settings as varied as small assisted living facilities to large, free-standing Alzheimer’s buildings, she has a broad and balanced perspective of the services we provide. Her priority is to ensure the quality of care our residents receive.
Robert E. Barrett, Corporate Manager

Mr. Barrett has experience in real estate management, acquisitions and construction, and is an IREM Certified Property Manager. He worked in the home building and construction industry for over two years as the Vice President of Operations for a Charlottesville-based home building company. Rob now oversees day-to-day maintenance operations, preventive maintenance programming to ensure a quality environment for our residents, and contract management for our outsourced services. He is also responsible for general contract management of our ongoing construction and renovation projects.
