Personalized Care

At Commonwealth Senior Living at Leigh Hall, personalized care is the hallmark of our community. With our experience, we know that no two residents will have the same exact needs. A “one-size-fits-all” approach to care is not in anybody’s best interest.

We provide a personalized care plan for each resident we have the privilege of serving. We start by meeting with the resident, the family members and personal physician. Through careful assessment, we determine the resident’s specific needs, but also identify his or her retained abilities and preferences. With all of that essential information, we carefully develop a detailed and personalized care plan that provides the support that is needed and also promotes independence.

This unique perspective enables them to offer exceptional care.

Sweet MemoriesTM

Program Components

Sweet MemoriesTM consists of three components to ensure the best possible experience for our residents and their families.

Move-in: From physical to emotional needs, we guide our residents through every step of the transition to our community, whether from home or hospital.

Evaluation through life history: We learn each resident’s life story. We conduct a comprehensive interview with family members. We talk. We ask questions. We listen. We get to know our residents as people. We learn about their medical, mental, emotional, spiritual and intellectual needs, as well as their habits and preferences.

Resident-centered care plan: With this very personal knowledge, our leadership team creates a customized care plan to meet the specific needs of the resident.

Signature Programs • Signature Experience

Unique. Effective. Innovative. Forward-thinking. Our signature Sweet MemoriesTM programs make a tremendous difference in the lives of our residents and their families.

One Sweet Memory: Winner of the Best Practice Award from the Virginia Assisted Living Association (VALA), for going above and beyond the standards of care. Our team members regularly capture highlights of each resident’s day in photographs that are shared regularly with family members.

Expressions: When verbal skills begin to fail, art can become a means of self-expression for residents. Conversational prompting stimulates memories which residents can interpret using a variety of mediums, including painting.

Special Touch: Designed specifically for those with late-stage memory loss, this program provides “special touches” that make a difference in care. In the morning, before breakfast, residents enjoy citrus scented towels to awaken taste buds; before dinner, lavender scented towels help to relax, reinforce the natural circadian rhythm and encourage residents to enjoy their meals.

Sweet Melodies: For those with late-stage dementia who have lost verbal skills, Sweet Melodies stirs memories by using nostalgic music selected by family members.

SMILE™ Technology: Through SMILE™, we can remain connected to your loved one every day. This computer program enables us to keep you updated on your loved one’s participation in and enjoyment of our programming, sharing photos and stories with you on a daily basis.

Memory Care Life Stations: Thoughtful spaces invite your loved one to reconnect and engage with past hobbies, professions and passions.

I recently toured Leigh Hall as an option for my mom and dad and was so impressed with the inviting nature and warm staff. It's central location will make it easier for my sister and I to visit and the rooms are larger than any community we've visited so far. The Director of Sales and Marketing was so helpful and knowledgeable. We felt very reassured that our parents would be in great hands.

After a long year of trying to find the perfect place to move my grandmother, Leigh Hall was recommended twice in a 24 hour period. I made an appointment, met with Ilene Lipton, and chose Leigh Hall. Since making that decision, I have been so pleased with everyone and everything. They were very accommodating to my time line. This decision was thrust upon me but Leigh Hall as a whole has been a blessing! They continue to take great care of my grandmother. I don’t know what I would have done without everyone here! They have taken the worry out of my day and let me be more concerned with just visiting instead of caretaking.

In July of 2014 my Mom passed away. Being the center of all of our lives, it was very hard on all of us, especially my Dad, having been married for 68 years. He wanted to remain in their home, so initiated a 24-hour In Home Care. His health started declining and with the increasing cost of In Home Care, a decision needed to b emade on moving him to Assisted Living. I began a search in our area. When I first called Leigh Hall, my first contact was with Roshawn Foot'e-Scott. She was very informative about the facility and her concern for my situation prompted me to make an appointment and take a tour with my Dad. Having lived in his home with my Mom for 52 years, this decision was very hard on my Dad. From the moment we walked in the door and saw the little pineapple blackboard with "Welcome Finney Family" on it, our fears began to ease. There was an immediate connection with Starr Caulder, the Executive Director. Her compassion and knowledge took away any lingering fears. The interaction she had with her staff and residents clearly showed the respect and admiration they had for her. We signed up for an apartment that day and Dad moved in on Dec. of 2014. Unfortunately, his health seriously declined and he passed away in January of 2015. His stay was short, but due to the caring staff, Dad and I were showered with love, compassion, and tender care, which meant everything to me and my husband each and every day we were there with him. My husband and I continue to visit Leigh Hall, and the "friends" we made there always bring positive memories as we continue to heal. Leigh Hall will be my FIRST recommendation to anyone seeking an Assisted Living Facility for their loved one.

It was a good experience with Leigh Hall. They helped me a lot and they helped my loved one a lot too with getting her settled in to the facility and everything. I have already recommended them to someone.

They seem to be really good at working with us to make sure that my Mom is comfortable and getting the best care possible. We are really pleased with the place.

First of all, I can't thank "A Place for Mom" enough for helping me. Having to place a loved one in a place away from the home they love is very stressful. A Place for Mom walked me through every step. They set up tours in various facilities until we found the right fit for mom. I'd recommend their services to anyone. We finally decided on Leigh Hall Assisted Living Facility in Norfolk. From the frist step in the door, we knew it was just what we were looking for. A beautiful, clean appearance caught our eye immediately. The new wing which they named "Sweet Memories" is for dementia patients. It is decorated in such a way to remind the residents of happier times. Mom mentions to us on every visit that the staff is wonderful and the food is good! You should go see this facility!

I took a tour day before Thanksgiving 2015 of Leigh Hall, and really enjoyed an informative and very pleasant time with Meleesa (sp?), their sales representative. She was bubbly, energetic and knew everything and more about Leigh Hall's Memory Care unit. I felt positives from the receptionist and every staff person I met there. Danielle, their receptionist, is a ray of sunshine, both on the phone and in greeting every visitor. The place is clean, new and beautiful. I love that the Memory Care unit is brand new, as the staff is fresh and enthusiastic, which I feel is great for the patients there. I liked that it was not crowded at all, which I felt would give my mom more special attention if she were there. The vignettes set up with themes, the relaxation room for sundowner syndrome, and the fact that there was a baby grand piano in the foyer, and an upright piano where mom would live, interested me because I have wanted to see if Mom could still play (she played organ and piano in our church for 40 years, and played jazz with my father in their little combo when I was a kid). I could see myself walking her over to it, and seeing what might happen. I felt an affinity with the place before I even got there, because Mom and I drove past it many times on our way home from Costco, where I'd take her to shop. Meleesa explained about the food prep, the ""fantastic"" chef, and the many choices they give the patients, knowing that in this disease, their tastes change. I loved the fact that Mom could get her hair done at the in-house salon as well. I loved every aspect of Leigh Hall, and that was because of the exemplary staff, Meleesa, in particular, whose warmth, kindness and good way about her made me feel quite positive about bringing my beloved mother to Leigh Hall. I hope that Leigh Hall recognizes the quality Meleesa brings to a visitor's experience there.

We moved my mother-in-law in several weeks ago. She is receiving excellent care and so are we. We are very pleased with the environment, care, food, cleanliness, etc. So far, she is adjusting well to the move.

Leigh Hall was right in the commercial area. It was a former hotel, so the first floor with the dining room included was very posh. The bedrooms were adequate but not great. The people we talked to were nice and doing a special event for the people that live there. They have a special event at least one every week. The downstairs facilities were very nice, including the dining room, the sitting rooms, and the library.

I met with Melisa and was very impressed with the meeting and tour. I spent 2 hours and left with knowing that not only did she care about my dad but also about me and my brother and sisters. She has made herself available to answer any additional questions and give a tour of the facilities to the rest of my family. The facility itself was clean and light it was nicely decorated and provided its clientele a safe environment. The activities offered a holistic approach to caregiving.

I was able to take a tour at Leigh Hall, and the place was good and clean. The rooms were adequate. The staff was helpful and tried to answer our questions. The residents looked happy.

I liked Leigh Hall Assisted Living. Everything was very nice, and I was struck by the fact that as we were touring the facility, the staff was very attentive to the residents. They were very friendly and were talking to them. It wasn’t like they were just going about their business. I didn’t try the food, but I did see the menu because it was posted. I like the fact that they didn’t stick to a particular time. They were very nice size rooms. Their activity room is like an atrium right in the middle. If you lived on the second floor, you could come out of your room and not even have to come downstairs if you didn’t want to. You could sit there and observe.

I'm very pleased with my mother's move to this community. She has settled into this community very well. I know she is safe and being care for very well. The staff is good, they are great at keeping me up to date on information about my mother. She has even made some new friends with her move. Her room is nice and big. Their rates worked well with our budget. It has been a great experience. I would recommend this community to anybody that is looking for this type of care.
