William Mills
Hometown : Apex, NC, then Norfolk
Despite having a nephew and great nephews in the nearby area, William Mills thought his 90th year was probably a good time to choose a living situation where he had some more company, and people nearby who could help if he needed assistance on a daily basis . A retired Navy officer, William chose Kings Grant House as his new home in May. He had been living by himself, less than three miles away, for many years, and liked the fact that when he moved to Kings Grant, he would be staying in his own neighborhood. “I was living by myself with nobody to talk with. It was kind of lonesome. At 90, I think it was about time for me to make the move,” said William. Not a big one for bingo or trips to familiar landmarks nearby, William instead spends some of his free time at Kings Grant House playing music for the staff and his fellow residents. He picked up the guitar when he was 13 years old in his home state of North Carolina. William kept playing the instrument throughout his Navy career, on ships and cruisers, and well past his retirement as a Chief Warrant Officer in Ordnance. He’s volunteered to play guitar for his new friends, and the staff that he thinks so much of there. “I entertain them a little with some country music,” said William. He’s even agreed to play some holiday music if he feels up to the task. Reflecting back on his decision to move to Kings Grant, William is certain it was the right thing for him. “It couldn’t be better. The staff and people, they’re all very nice here,” he said. |
