Growth & Acquisition
At Commonwealth Senior Living, we don’t pursue growth and acquisition to simply get larger. We strive to bring quality senior living services, including independent living, assisted living and memory care to underserved areas, making these much needed services available to seniors, their families and the communities we serve.
Our growth has been steady and purposeful. Since its start in 2002, with three communities containing 110 units and 135 licensed beds, Commonwealth Senior Living has grown to be one of largest providers of independent living, assisted living and memory care services in the state of Virginia, with 23 communities comprised of over 1,500 units and the capacity to serve over 1,800 residents.
This growth has occurred entirely through acquisition and expansion of acquired communities. Commonwealth Senior Living’s Founder and CEO, Richard J. Brewer, believes in the strategy of investing resources back into existing communities.
Renovations and updates strengthen their position in their marketplaces, the addition of memory care services, where not available, expands the market reach and provides continuum of care for residents and families. Expanding the overall capacity of the communities allows for greater financial stability as well as career growth opportunities for the associates who work in them.

Criteria for Acquisition
Assisted Living/Memory Care/Independent Living/Senior Apartments
- Single assets located in VA, MD and/or portfolios located in those regions in addition to WV, NC, TN.
- 40+ units with expansion potential or 50+ units with or without expansion potential for AL or MC. 80+ units for IL and/or Senior Apartments.
- ≤ 20% of beds designated Medicaid or similar program.
- Majority private rooms with private baths.
- I-2 or I-2 achievable construction standards (all or part). Must have full sprinkler systems.
